BRN (Business Registration Number)

The BRN is an 8-digit number issued by the Hong Kong Inland Revenue Department to every business, including companies, partnerships, and sole proprietorships, under the Business Registration Ordinance (Cap. 310).

The BRN accompanies the Business Registration Certificate, which every business in Hong Kong must display at its place of business. For incorporated companies, the BRN is distinct from the CR number — the BRN identifies the tax-paying entity, while the CR number identifies the corporate legal entity. A sole proprietorship or partnership has a BRN but no CR number.
